What do you get with a Individual or Family Health Insurance Plan?

With a health insurance plan, you get coverage for essential healthcare services such as doctor visits, hospital stays, emergency care, prescription medications, and preventive services like vaccinations and screenings. Most plans also cover maternity and newborn care, mental health services, and rehabilitative treatments. Depending on the plan, you may have co-pays, deductibles, and premiums, but health insurance helps reduce your out-of-pocket expenses and protects you from high medical costs in the event of serious illness or injury.

Key Features of Individual & Family Health Insurance:

  • Comprehensive Coverage
These plans cover a broad range of healthcare services, including doctor visits, hospital stays, prescription drugs, preventive care, emergency services, maternity care, and more. The coverage can vary depending on the policy selected, but all plans must include essential health benefits as required by the Affordable Care Act (ACA).
  • Eligibility
Anyone can apply for individual or family health insurance, especially if they are self-employed, between jobs, or their employer doesn't provide health insurance. Family plans cover the primary policyholder, their spouse, and their dependent children.
  • Premiums and Cost-Sharing
The monthly premium is the amount you pay for coverage, while other costs like co-pays, deductibles, and coinsurance apply when accessing medical care. ACA-compliant plans offer tiered levels of coverage (bronze, silver, gold, platinum) that determine the cost-sharing amounts and coverage levels.
  • Enrollment Periods
You can usually purchase or change individual and family health insurance during the open enrollment period. Special enrollment periods (SEP) allow for changes outside of this window due to qualifying life events like marriage, having a child, losing other coverage, or moving.
  • Subsidies and Financial Assistance
Depending on your income level, you may qualify for government subsidies or tax credits that lower your monthly premium. These subsidies are available through the health insurance marketplace under the ACA.
  • Customizable Coverage
You can tailor your plan to meet your family's needs, choosing from different providers, levels of coverage, and out-of-pocket expenses. Family plans allow you to combine coverage for multiple members under one policy.
